9th Company: Roots of Terror
Description
9th Company: Roots of Terror is a real-time strategy game based on events that took place during the Soviet military campaign in Afghanistan in 1988. The game follows the story of a ragged band of young recruits undergoing brutal training in Uzbekistan's Fergana Valley and culminates with a bloody stand against the Mujahideen warriors on a nameless mountain top in Afghanistan. The game is a tie-in to the 2005 film 9 Rota.
The game contains twelve maps that can be played using a zoomed out, almost top-down view, or directly on the ground between the units. There are more than 80 different unit types and various mechanisms for tactical behaviour and firepower control, along with a combat reward and morale system to urge the player to preserve units to make use of their experience. Based on the progress, the mission structure is non-linear.
