Receiver
Description
Receiver is an open source first-person shooter created for the 7-day FPS challenge. The game takes cues from roguelike games with permadeath (usually a single hit kills) and randomized levels for each session. The focus is however largely on gun handling mechanics. The game is played from a first-person perspective with the gun floating in the air in front of the character. Optionally a flashlight can be used in the same manner.
The game is set in a building filled with rooms and stairs. The character spawns with one of three available guns: Colt 1911 pistol, S&W Model 10 "Victory" revolver, or Glock 17 with full-auto mod. Each gun has a complex handling system, involving pulling back the slide, releasing the slide lock, ejecting and loading magazines, opening and spinning the cylinder, extracting casings, manually putting bullets inside, and more - different for each type of weapon in a complex series of keyboard actions. Levels contains stationary turrets and floating taser robots. The latter have an alert system that is deactivated if the character remains out of sight for a while. The goal of the game is to explore the level and collect up to eleven audio cassettes. When picked up, these provide voices hints and reveal the game's story. The game has a hint system where the commands for all actions are shown on the screen, with the most important ones for the next action highlighted in white.
